Operatives of CROSSBOW
Black Box is a somewhat mysterious system for communication between CROSSBOW teams. Black Box signals are said to be untraceable, but unfortunately the smallest of the Black Box units, each of which is unique, is the size of a small cathedral organ and must be housed in an acoustically perfect chamber in Tiller Base.
The Pavis Base Black Box is a circular, stone table fifteen feet across. Eighteen inches from the outer edge is a rotating ring, inscribed with letters, numbers and punctuation, which spells out coded messages from Control or from other bases. A large, mahogany box contains a five-drum Engima machine for decoding and encoding incoming and outgoing messages, and a ouija board and planchet which is used to enter outgoing signals.
